Scientific Illustration & Graphic Design

I’m passionate about showing scientists how they can better communicate their science through art. I primarily use my iPad for digital illustrations that have been used for outreach, talks and publications.

Expetise:

  • Digital illustrations for papers, talks, posters, etc.

  • Graphic design for organizations, scientific communication, etc.

  • Graphic design workshops for scientists

Fees and pricing:

Because of the stipulations of my fellowship, I am not allowed to take paid commission work. However, if you have an exceptional project — particularly one that seeks to advance community knowledge or marginalized identities in STEM— please reach out to me about the project. I may be able to help pro bono (for free).

Despite no longer doing paid work, I am keeping my former pricing public for other freelance artists to reference. For figures for scientific papers, I typically charged a $1000 minimum and a rate of $45/hour for any hour after the first 20 hours. The example figures below generally took 15-30 hours to complete.

For other graphic design work (including logos, custom slide designs and posters), I generally charged a rate of $45/hour.

Periodically, I take pro bono projects for papers that focus on advancing diversity, equity, and justice in STEM. If you’re working on a paper with this theme, please reach out. I may be able to provide an illustration for your paper at no cost.

I also offered live graphic facilitation/live sketching for events at a similar rate. See my live sketch portfolio here.

Illustrations for scientific publications:

Some illustrations have been commissioned specifically for scientific publications. If you are interested in commissioning a piece for a publication, please email me at calliech@stanford.edu

Graphic Design

I design custom slides, posters, and logos for clients. Please let me know if you are interested in commission original artwork.

I have taught several graphic design workshops and produced several YouTube videos for the broader scientific community.

These were created as an organizer for STAR, an interdisciplinary student organization dedicated to promoting science communication between the Stanford research community and the general public. I have taught several STAR workshops, including teaching students to make 2-minute Science Sketch videos and a workshop on Adobe Illustrator. I have also organized a panel of scientists and artists that work at the intersection of science and art. Other workshops I have facilitated include: 3D printing for science communication, science storytelling, and graphic design for science communication. Based on this experience, I now teach science communication workshops professionally. Please reach out if you are interested in hiring me to teach a workshop for your organization.
